On Friday, Chairman of Reliance Industries Mukesh Ambani called for immediate policy measures to shift away from 2G services, which started 25 years ago, and make it a “part of history” On the silver jubilee of India’s first cell phone call, Mr. Ambani said 2 G era feature phones kept about 30 crore subscribers away from basic internet services as both India and other countries joined the 5 G era.
“I refer directly to the fact that India still has 300 million mobile subscribers stuck in the 2 G period, their feature phones keep them excluded even from simple internet access at a time when both India and the rest of the world stand at the doorstep of 5 G telephony. I think the appropriate political measures should be taken urgently to make 2 G a part of history, “Mr. Ambani said.
Mr. Ambani had previously declared that RIL’s telecom arm Jio would strive to liberate India from 2 G by moving from mobile phones to an affordable smartphone.
