Telecom czar Sunil Bharti Mittal made a renewed appeal on Friday to lower the high levies on the telecommunications industry, saying the government would not perceive the sector as a conduit for the exchequer, but rather as a “power multiplier” to ensure economic momentum.
Mr. Mittal, chairman of Bharti Airtel, also said that Atmanirbhar Bharat ‘s vision of the Prime Minister calls on the industry to ensure that more value is added for telecommunications networks , mobile devices and apps in India.
“Taxes on this sector have traditionally been very high. It is necessary for this to be thoroughly checked and telecom tools such as spectrum, levies should not become a source for the exchequer, but should become a force multiplier in ensuring that economic momentum gets faster and accelerated. So, government will receive their dues from other industries that will be riding on the back of this marvelous industry, “Mittal said.
The government must also ensure that due attention is paid to the telecommunications industry, which has had its ups and downs, in the field of levies and taxes, Mr. Mittal said, speaking at an event organized by India’s Cellular Operators Association and IMC Studio to mark the 25th anniversary of Mobile Telephony’ in India.
