The Union Health Ministry Thursday notified new sets of specified health warnings to be printed on all tobacco products with enhanced pictorial images.
The Third Amendment Regulations, 2020, for cigarettes and other tobacco products (packaging and labeling) will come into effect from December 1.
It amends the Laws of 2008 on Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Packing and Labelling). Both tobacco products manufactured or imported or packaged on or after 1 December 2020 will display the first set of images, while the second set of images will be displayed on or after 1 December 2021 by the tobacco products manufactured or imported or packaged, as specified in a statement by the health ministry.
“Any person directly or indirectly engaged in the produce, produce, supply, import or sale of cigarettes or any tobacco product shall ensure that all packages of tobacco products have the health warnings specified exactly as prescribed.
“Violation of the above provision is an offense punishable by imprisonment or fine as specified in Section 20 of the Law on Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Control on Exchange and Export, Production, Supply and Distribution), 2003,” the Ministry of Health said in its statement.
