NEW DELHI: Hyderabad vaccine company Bharat Biotech announced on Monday that its COVAXIN has become the country’s first Covid vaccine candidate to be approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) and the first vaccine to have phase 1 and phase II human clinical trials approved by the drug controller. The company has been working on the vaccine for some time, in partnership with the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology, Pune, as stated earlier by TOI.
After submitting results obtained from preclinical studies, the DCGI gave the company permission to begin phase I & II human clinical trials, demonstrating safety and immune response. Human clinical trials are scheduled to start across the country in July, a company’s statement said.
