Telecom network working at 85% capacity in Amphan-hit areas of West Bengal

Telecom service providers were able to restore connectivity to a capacity level of only 80-85 percent in areas of West Bengal hit by supercyclone Amphan due to erratic power supply, continued fiber cuts and obstruction by people protesting against disruption of electricity and water supply, industry body COAI said Monday.

Earlier that day, Telecom Department had asked companies to lift the connectivity level by Monday evening to 95 percent.

“The overall telecommunications network has been restored to a level of approximately 85 percent. The key reasons for this are intermittent power supply, fiber cuts and difficulties in reaching places as roads are blocked by fallen trees and even blocked by angry people,” COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews told PTI.
