NASA, the world’s premier space agency, is all set to send a life-hunter on July 30 to Mars. NASA’s Perseverance rover will search for past or present signs of life on the Red Planet.

According to NASA, in February 2021 Perseverance will land on Mars, and the rover will use several high-end instruments including 23 cameras to examine the Red Planet’s climate and geology.

“Persistence will bring to Mars all kinds of senses. It can feel the air around it, see and scan the horizon, hear the planet with microphones on the surface for the first time, feel it as it picks up samples to cache, maybe even taste it, in a sense as it conducts chemical analysis of the dust, “NASA’s Thomas Zurbuchen said at a July 20 press conference.

Upon landing on the surface of Mars, Perseverance would release from its underside a small helicopter named Ingenuity. “We as humans have never flew a rotorcraft, a helicopter, anywhere beyond the atmosphere of Earth, so it’s really a moment for Wright Brothers on another planet,” said MiMi Aung, Ingenuity ‘s leading engineer, during the press conference.

Aung added that Ingenuity would only stay in air for a total of at most 15 minutes, but these helicopters may be used in the future to conduct research in inaccessible areas. Aung noted that helicopters such as Ingenuinty can also act as rover and astronaut scouts.

Perseverance will also hold an instrument that will be used to capture carbon dioxide oxygen in Mars’ thin atmosphere. “Perseverance is also the link between science and human exploration, showing how the two can support and reinforce each other,” Zurbuchen said.
